Scissor Lift Operators and Site Preparation: What to Have Ready

Renting a scissor lift is not just about picking a unit and a date. Two things are often forgotten: who will operate the machine, and whether the site is truly ready when the machine arrives.
This guide explains when you should hire a trained operator, what training your team should have and a site preparation list so work can start as soon as the machine comes off the truck.
Do You Need to Hire an Operator?
Not every project needs an operator from the rental company. If your team is already trained and used to machines at height, you can hire the machine alone. In some situations, though, a trained operator is a worthwhile investment.
Situations That Call for an Operator
- Your team has never operated a scissor lift or other machine at height.
- Building management or the main contractor requires a certified operator.
- Work takes place in public areas such as malls or hotels that remain open.
- The site carries higher risk, such as uneven ground, slopes or overhead power lines.
- A short project where training your own team is not worth the time.
Operator Cost
A trained operator is available from RM150 per day, on top of the machine rental rate. For longer projects, discuss operator arrangements alongside a weekly or monthly rate. See machine rate ranges in scissor lift rental price 2026.

Training Your Team Should Have
If your team will run the machine themselves, make sure they understand these basics before the first working day.
- How to carry out a pre-shift inspection and spot faults.
- What each control does, on the platform and at ground level.
- The load limit of the unit in use: 230 kg, 350 kg or 450 kg depending on type.
- Emergency procedures, including how to lower the platform manually.
- How to assess ground surface, slopes and overhead obstacles.
The complete daily inspection list is in our scissor lift safety checklist. Share it with every worker who will go up on the platform.
Site Preparation Before the Machine Arrives
One of the most common causes of delay is a machine that arrives but cannot be brought in. Check the following the day before delivery.
Access and Unloading
- Unloading area: enough room for the truck to stop and unload the machine safely.
- Route to the work location: door widths, entrance headroom and no obstructions along the way.
- Goods lift: if the machine must go to an upper floor, confirm the lift's capacity and size.
- Access approval: security passes or work permits approved by building management.
The Work Area
Clear the floor beneath the work point of furniture, pallets or building materials. Make sure the surface is level and strong enough. For outdoor work, check the ground after rain, because a soft surface can undermine the machine's stability.
Power Supply
For electric units hired for more than a day, provide a power socket nearby to charge the battery overnight. Without one, the machine may not be fully usable the next day.

What Happens on Delivery Day
Knowing how delivery works helps you plan your team and timing better. Delivery time depends on where your site is.
- Klang Valley: usually within two hours of a confirmed booking.
- Selangor: same-day delivery for bookings made before noon.
- Other Peninsular states such as Johor, Penang, Perak, Pahang and Melaka: one to two working days.
- Sabah and Sarawak: three to five days.
Make sure someone is on site to receive the machine, check the paperwork and show the work location. This is also the best time to check the PMA certificate, as explained in JKKP PMA certificates for scissor lifts.
Make Sure the Booked Unit Suits the Site
Good site preparation starts with choosing the right unit. A unit that is too big may not fit the route, while an electric unit may not suit rough ground.
Before booking, read how to choose scissor lift height and electric vs diesel scissor lifts. Share photos of the access route and work area when you book so we can confirm the right unit.
Communication on Site
Work at height involves more than the operator. Make sure everyone on site knows the work location and duration, including supervisors, security guards and other contractors.
Assign a spotter on the floor whenever the platform is raised, especially in busy areas. Also agree who to call if the machine has a problem, so action can be taken straight away.
Tips for a Smooth First Day
The first day sets the pace for the whole project. A few small steps can prevent lost time once the machine is on site.
- Hold a short safety briefing before the platform goes up for the first time.
- Stage all materials and tools at the work area early so the platform does not keep coming down.
- Mark cordoned areas clearly before work starts.
- Record the first inspection as a reference for later shifts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can our own operator run the machine?
Yes, if they are trained and approved by site management. Make sure they understand the controls and load limit of the unit you hire.
Can the supplied operator work overtime?
Discuss working hours when booking, especially for night work in malls or hotels. We will align the operator arrangement with your project schedule.
What happens if the site is not ready when the machine arrives?
The machine may have to wait or be rescheduled, which can add cost. That is why preparing the site the day before delivery matters so much.
