How to Choose the Right Scissor Lift Height for Your Job

One of the most expensive mistakes when renting a scissor lift is picking the wrong height. A unit that is too short forces workers to stretch or climb, while one that is too big may not fit through the door and costs more to hire.

This guide shows you how to work out your real working height and match it to the right unit, from the 6-metre Mini Electric to the 20-metre Heavy Duty Diesel.

Platform Height vs Working Height

These two terms often cause confusion. Platform height is the distance from the ground to the platform floor when the machine is fully raised. Working height is the level a worker standing on the platform can reach with their hands.

Across the industry, working height is usually taken as roughly two metres above platform height. When booking, always confirm with us which figure is being quoted so there is no misunderstanding.

Why the Difference Matters

If your ceiling is 10 metres high and you choose a unit rated at 10 metres working height, your workers will reach the ceiling comfortably. If you mistake that figure for platform height, you may end up paying for a bigger unit than you need.

How to Measure the Height You Need

Follow these simple steps before you ask for a quote. They take only a few minutes but can prevent a booking mistake.

  1. Measure the highest work point from the floor, such as a light fitting, pipe or beam.
  2. Add room for tools and a comfortable working position, usually half a metre to one metre.
  3. Check for obstacles below the work point, such as racking, machinery or furniture, that stop the machine getting close.
  4. Measure the entrance width and the headroom along the route the machine must travel.
  5. Take photos of the work area to share when you book.

Matching Height to Unit Type

Once you know the height you need, match it to the unit categories below. Each category also has a different load limit.

6–8 Metres: Mini Electric

Suits warehouses, offices, classrooms, restaurants and hotel corridors. The 230 kg maximum load covers one or two workers with light tools. Rates start from RM300 per day.

10–15 Metres: Standard Electric

The most popular choice for shopping centres, factories and convention centres. With a 350 kg load it carries two workers and installation materials. Rates start from RM500 per day.

15–20 Metres: Heavy Duty Diesel

Built for construction, infrastructure and tall outdoor work. The 450 kg load allows heavy jobs such as structural installation. Rates start from RM800 per day. For rough ground at 8–18 m, a Diesel Rough-Terrain 4WD unit is also available.

Real-World Examples

Here are some typical requests we receive from customers across Malaysia, and the unit we usually recommend.

  • Changing lights in a warehouse with 7-metre racking: Mini Electric or Standard Electric, depending on distance from the racks.
  • Painting a 12-metre mall atrium ceiling: Standard Electric.
  • Mounting signage on an 18-metre building facade: Heavy Duty Diesel.
  • Repairing a factory roof over gravel ground: Diesel Rough-Terrain.

What If You Need Horizontal Reach?

A scissor lift only goes straight up. If the work point sits above an obstacle such as machinery, a tank or a pool, a scissor lift may not get close enough. In that case a boom lift, which can reach sideways, may be the better fit.

We explain this difference in more detail in scissor lift vs boom lift. In short, if the machine can sit directly below the work point, a scissor lift is usually more stable and more economical.

Do Not Forget Access and Floor Strength

The right height means nothing if the machine cannot reach the work point. Taller units are usually wider, longer and heavier, so the access route needs checking alongside the height.

Door Width and Goods Lift

A Mini Electric unit passes through most standard doors, but Standard and Heavy Duty units need a roller shutter or vehicle entrance. If the machine must go to an upper floor, confirm the goods lift capacity and door size first.

Floor Strength

Mezzanine floors, thin tiled floors or drain covers may not carry the weight of the machine plus its platform load. If in doubt, check with the building engineer or management before the machine is brought in.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Height

The first mistake is guessing ceiling height without measuring. A ceiling that looks like 8 metres may actually be 10, especially in large spaces with nothing to give a sense of scale.

The second mistake is picking the tallest unit "to be safe". A bigger unit is not only more expensive, it may not fit the aisle or goods lift. Compare the costs in our scissor lift rental price guide 2026.

The third mistake is forgetting about load. Two workers with paint tins, a small step and power tools can exceed a Mini unit's limit. Add up the total weight before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go higher than the maximum by standing on a ladder on the platform?

No. Putting a ladder or box on the platform is dangerous and prohibited. If the height is not enough, rent a taller unit.

Are taller units less stable?

Each unit is designed to be stable at its maximum height when used on level ground within its load limit. Ground conditions and wind affect stability far more than height itself.
